We're a picture of domestic bliss: the Macy's parade is on, the turkey is roasting in the oven (free-range turkey, of course), and J is peeling potatoes. Never mind I got a bunch of the other essential dinner items from the Whole Foods Prepared Foods Department.
In college, my roommate(s) and other pals would invade Manhattan for Thanksgiving. We'd take the Shuttle which flew on either the hour or half-hour depending on the airline for the student rate of $50, no reservations necessary. One roommate D had a dad who was then Chairman of Macy's so we could go "backstage" the night before as they blew up the balloons for the parade next door to the Museum of Natural History. D always let her two best friends march in the parade as clowns, but that was not necessarily me or our other two roommates. :-(
There were at least three in our group who lived in Manhattan, so the rest of would get to be houseguests. I would regularly stay with my constant roomie/friend A whose aunt lived on CPW, prime viewing space for the parade. My last two years my mom would come out and we'd stay at a hotel, usually a Helmsley one near the Park.
My college pals and I had no cellphones then, but we'd all manage to meet up for shopping (at Macy's of course), skating at Rockefeller, a visit to a museum, or maybe a show or movie. Penelope P would always have a party the Friday night after Thanksgiving. She now is a classics professor in Athens.
Those were good times!!! Nowadays M and A have a party here every Saturday night after Thanksgiving. Not quite the Upper East Side, but very much a gathering of good friends.
Happy Thanksgiving!
